Cupertino, CA (PRWEB) June 17, 2009 - As cyber-criminals become more sophisticated, computer users who fail to secure their PCs and the information they contain have become unwitting supporters of terrorism, organized crime and other unscrupulous activities. A new book, "Scrappy Information Security," clearly explains ways that users can protect themselves from common threats.
Security threats can be expensive, time consuming and overwhelming. The Federal Trade Commission's 2006 Identity Theft Survey Report showed that while most victims clean up the mess with very little effort, 10% spent at least 55 hours resolving these problems. Five percent spent at least 130 hours.
"The topic of security is often so complex and large that it is overwhelming to everyone but the IT department. So rather than take precautions, people usually ignore the problem, allowing it to flourish. Usually it's not until a threat takes down your computer or you get a virus that you react, trying to undo the damage," said Michael Seese, CISSP, CIPP.
Stay online long enough, and scam emails and attempts to steal a credit card number become almost commonplace. And as the crooks refine their techniques, it becomes more difficult to tell the difference between legitimate offers and scams.
Sadly, we largely have accepted these threats as part of being online. "But none of us would tolerate a crime spree in our neighborhood. Likewise, we should not tolerate the current crime wave that is sweeping the Internet. These crimes threaten to stifle the e-commerce and e-communications which we have come to rely on and curse at."
For example, consider that there is a way to end spam. "It's relatively simple to end spam as we know it. It lies in teaching every man, woman, and child on the planet what spam is, how to recognize it, and what to do with spam emails. If no one ever responded to a spam message, the money would dry up, and it would go away," said Seese.
The book was written by an information security, privacy, business contingency professional and former journalist. Seese has written two books about computer security. He holds a Master of Science in information security, and a Master of Arts in psychology.
This book should be read by anyone who cares about the security and privacy of their online information, and wants to know how to take steps to protect it ... and that should be everyone.
